Your note
Cadiz is the oldest continuously inhabited settlement in Western Europe. Almost entirely surrounded by water, the city appears isolated, sitting on a peninsula jutting out into the Bay of Cadiz.
This ancient city on the Costa de la Luz in Andalusia is approximately 3,000 years old. The Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Romans have all settled here at one point over the years. Initially it was called 'Gadir' by the Phoenicians. They were the first settlers, in 1100 BC. Next were the Carthaginians and then the Romans who turned it into a thriving port. During the 17th century, trading between Cadiz and the rest of the world increased dramatically; the economy boomed.
Cadiz is very relaxed and easy-going. Even at night, you'd feel safe walking around the city. It's probably due to its small size and the presence of the sea. It's almost impossible to get lost as you're never more than a few blocks away from the coastline although the narrow streets in the historic centre of Cadiz can often feel like a labyrinth.
The old quarter is probably the most beautiful part of the city, famous for its picturesque charm. Here you'll find some spectacular buildings, and all just a few metres from the coast. The narrow and cobbled streets open out onto pretty little squares such as Plaza Mina, Plaza San Antonio and Plaza San Francisco. People sit outside in cafes all day long enjoying the cool sea breeze and warm sunshine, and gazing up at the Moorish architecture.
Cadiz, or 'Little Havana' as it's often called, has strong relations with Cuba. There has been a continuous flow of traffic between the two cites over the years. The two cities even look very similar. Cuban scenes from the James Bond film (Die another day) were shot here in the city.
You can walk around the historic centre in about an hour, along the maze of narrow streets. There are also some lovely parks such as 'Parque Genoves' with spectacular views out to the bay.
