Brief summary of the history of the city. The city of Cádiz was founded by the Phoenicians in 1100BC. It started off as a trading post for various commodities like tin, silver and Ambar.
After the Moorish reign in the 16th century, the city began to prosper. It had an excellent strategic location; perfect for trading with the New World. It was from here that Christopher Columbus made two of his epic voyages to America.
It was during the 18th and 19th century that Cádiz prospered the most. Many of the important buildings in the city are from this period.
Cádiz has been the scene for many important conflicts, like the invasion of Sir Francis Drake.
In 1812, for the first time in Spain, the Liberal Constitution was set up. Nowadays, Cádiz's liberal spirit lives on. It remains an open and lively city. |
