Rota is located to the west of El Puerto. It's an old village seaside resort with a picturesque main square. The population is 25,000. Two of the main architechtural features are a castle that has been extensively restored and a beautiful 15th Century church.
Unfortunately, a rather ugly American military base has been set up right next to the village.
Rota is well known for its beautiful beaches. La Costilla is considered by many to be the best beach in Spain. It's right at the foot of the -su-interior-pueblos-blancos,town and stretches for 4 kilometres. The waters are crystal clear and the sand is fine and golden. The beach is edged by massive pine trees.
Although most of the tourists here are Spanish, Rota has a number of bars and restaurants catering to international tourism. It's a growing resort. There are plans for more developement near to La Ballena beach. |
