Tapa bars in Cadiz are the sure fire way to immerse yourself in Andalucian eating culture. This style of dining has been ever present in Cadiz for hundreds of years and is the preferred way to dine for most locals.
It will not take you long to find tapa bars in Cadiz. But nonetheless we have named a few that are certainly worth a look in. Beginning, as always, with Plocia Street away from the train station you should stop at the ‘La Bodeguita de Plocia’ which is traditional winery with local products offered as tapas such as cured meats, salted pork, fish and seafood. Further away from this winery you can enter 'La Cepa Gallega' where you can enjoy pork products, cheeses and an divine selection of wines. 'La Cigarrera' is another cosy little place which offers a similar styled menu full of typical tapa servings.
In San Agustin Square, close to San Francisco Street, you will find a tapa bar of Cadiz with a small difference. 'Abuela Elfrides' is a tapa bar but offers traditional Argentinian cuisine. Their speciality is the steak but also offer local favourites with a latin twist. English and German is spoken here too.
On San Francisco Street itself you will find many restaurants serving tapas. 'La Galeona' serves specialities from across the country such as Iberian chimichurri, a special seasoning for most meats and Bilboa style cod. Celebrating the constitution of Cadiz, 'Restaurante 1812', evokes the liberal spirit of the original constitution and offers some delicious tapas. A more modern twist on tapas can be found at 'Show de Tapas', it's continued variety is exemplified by the owner's desire to keep changing the style of the restaurant.
On a relatively unknown street,'Canovas del Castillo', lies 'La Perola' a tapa bar serving meatballs in Roquefort sauce as one of many options on their menu and they also serve paella daily. In 'La Vina' make sure to visit 'El Manteca'. This is a bar that is a shrine to Andalucian culture and has to be seen to be believed. They serve many of the typical cold meats and local wines.
Cathedral Square is home to a nice little tapa restaurant smartly named 'La Catedral Tapas Y Vinos' and serves various tapas in its spacious terrace. In little Mendizabal Square pop in for breakfast at 'Bar Las Nieves' where homemade lunches are a speciality. Nearby on Rosario Street you can enjoy a varied menu including some great tapa dishes at 'Bar El Canon'.
In De Mina Square there is a small street called Zorilla Street and here you can find 'Meson Cumbres Mayores'. There is a real authentic atmosphere and there are nice touches such as the legs of meat hanging around the place. There is an excellent choice of tapas and each dish is served with roast potatoes and a delicious tomato.
One of the finest restaurants in Cadiz is 'El Balandro'. Located in the Alameda Apodaca this is primarily a tapa bar but also doubles as a high-end restaurant. The tapas are served at the bar and there is a menu in Spanish and English. If you fancy a sit-down meal then there are tables but are a bit more expensive.
Remember this is only a small portion of the many tapa bars in Cadiz.
